About Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization
Hemorrhoid artery embolization (HAE) is a treatment that relieves internal hemorrhoids by reducing blood flow to the affected tissue, thus shrinking hemorrhoids and alleviating symptoms. It’s minimally invasive, generally painless, and treats hemorrhoids without going where you expect – no butts about it. You can even have this procedure with your underwear on!
Since HAE is an outpatient treatment that takes about an hour, you can go home that day and be back at work the next.
How It Actually Works

Our physicians will evaluate your needs and determine the best option to treat your hemorrhoids. If an HAE is an appropriate treatment, here is what you can expect.
The non-surgical procedure takes about an hour and there’s no sedation required.
Local anesthesia is applied to the puncture site and a tiny hollow tube is inserted into an artery in the upper thigh. The tube is then guided to the arteries supplying the hemorrhoids.
Tiny particles and coils are injected through the tube to reduce blood flow to the hemorrhoids
The decrease in blood flow to the hemorrhoids reduces their size and alleviates the symptoms, particularly bleeding and discomfort.
Is HAE For You?
HAE is for patients with symptomatic grade 1 to 3 internal bleeding hemorrhoids. It’s an appropriate option for those who have not found relief with more conservative treatments like diet changes, bowel adjustments or topical/oral medications.
